Trainee and Intern Program
J1X is currently designated as a sponsor of the J-1 Trainee and intern program. We currently sponsor programs in the following occupational categories:

  • information media and communications;
  • management, business, commerce and finance;
  • public administration and law;
  • sciences, engineering, architecture, mathematics, and industrial occupations;

Our programs can last from 3 weeks to 12 months (Interns) or 18 months (Trainees). The objective of our program is to enhance the skills and expertise of exchange visitors through participation in structured on-the-job training programs. Our program improve participants’ knowledge of American techniques, methodologies, and technology while also exposing them to American culture and society.

Expenses:
To participate in the Trainee/Intern program, J1X charges a J-1 processing fee of $1,495. You will also need to pay a $220 Sevis fee and mandatory J-1 program and insurance fee of $120 per month.

While you are participating in the Trainee/Intern program, you will also incur normal living expenses, just like you would at home. The amounts vary by location, but you should expect to spend around $900 or more for housing, $200 for utilities, $250 for food and $100 for local transportation.

Teacher program
The J-1 Teacher program allows you to teach full-time in accredited public and private U.S. primary and secondary schools for up to three years.  The objective is for exchange teachers to sharpen their professional skills and participate in cross-cultural activities in schools and communities, and they return home after completion of the program.

Expenses:
When participating in J1X’s Teacher program, you should expect the following expenses:

Sponsor fee:
J1X charges a sponsor fee of $1500.

Foreign or domestic third party or partner fees:
J1X does not work with third party agents to find placements for teachers. If you apply directly to J1X, there will be no separate third party or partner fees. If you find a placement on your own with the help of a third party agent, then this agent will likely charge a separate placement fee. Please check with the agent before making any commitment.

Visa fee:
The U.S. consulate in your home country will charge a visa fee of appr. $160.

SEVIS fee:
You will need to pay the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System fee of $220. You will pay this amount to J1X.

Insurance costs:
There is a cost for mandatory program and insurance in an amount of $90 per month. You will pay this amount to J1X.

Local expenses – estimate for food
This amounts varies by location, but you should expect to spend around $250 per month for food

Local expenses – housing
This amounts varies by location, but you should expect to spend around $900 per month for housing and $200 for utilities. You can reduce these expenses significantly by sharing housing with others

Local expenses – transportation
This amounts varies by location, but you should expect to spend around $100 per month for transportation

Work-related deductions
Because you already have mandatory insurance from J1X, there should not be any work-related deductions from your pay. Keep in mind that you will have to pay incomes taxes, those amounts will be deducted from your pay. Federal income tax rates are appr. 12% to 22%, you can calculate your taxes here.

Other expenses
J1X charges no other fees for participation in our teacher program. There are some other expenses that you will have to pay to other parties, such as foreign credentials evaluations (appr. $100). If you need to have documents translated, a third party translator will charge appr. $100
